*stabs self in face*
Here is a little story about a gnome. One morning this gnome decided to wake up early to get a head start on bashin' da baddies in eq.
Managing to drag myself through my waking up routines like clockwork I plop down at my desk. Presently to my knowledge I had 2 EQ enabled computers in front of me. Flip the monitors on, one of my traders crashed over night on my much stronger computer. Hrmm maybe it needs a restart I think to myself, not knowing the cataclysmic catastrophe that was about to befall upon my computer (just a hint of good ol' thick foreshadowing). I shut everything down and select reboot and turn my attention to logging in my shaman bot on the painfully slow machine (1.2ghz with a *shivers* geforce2 card in it) plop plop plop the old 20 gig HD lets me know it's still alive with every spin of the disc. A few minutes pass before I realize my main computer is stuck in a loop... It gets to the OS selection (I'm a gnome I need more than one for gnomish things) defaults to windoze (ir leet so I make fun of M$ zomg!). No loading XP screen just BAM! Like Emerald my pc reboots. Thinking to myself.. hrmm maybe the boot sector on my HD went to hell. Slap in the XP install CD to see if that will let me boot. Negative. Try booting to Linux, nope. Crap so I dig around the bios, everything looks fine... till I look at the hardware profiles.... my processor is clocked from a 2.8ghz to a 300mhz.... something is wrong.... So I reset it (no I wasnt changing the FSB. I'm a gnome not a halfling). Nothing it keeps de-clocking itself. At this point I'm starting to get worried. I take out the ram and try each stick one at a time, test every ide device one by one, swap graphic cards praying all the while to the gods of agnostica (knew I should have picked a deity! first fh gear now this!). Ok Gnome don't panic.. hopefully it's the trashy Soyo motherboard you bought because newegg had a huge rebate (that I still haven’t gotten back yet.. hrmm) on. So I pull my old p4 mother board (a decent one but didn’t support prescott which I was planning on upgrading to soonish). So I plopped it all in, tweaked the bios from the start. Same results on everything... A few cogs spinning in my head screeched to a halt.... So here I sit, my "spring break" for the campus I am a tech for starts tomorrow.... hopefully I'll be able to get a new processor by Monday or Tuesday... but playing eq unable to multibox on an old computer is painful. In an attempt to make it a touch better I put a geforce6800 and 1.5 gig of ram into this poor k7 1.2ghz computer. It still sucks, the graphics card has more processing power than the cpu =( This gnome is sad. To kick me while I’m down I just found out that there is no Santa Ogre and my “groin stomp” button I used to push actually doesn’t do anything =( |

I asked my boss if I could "fix" one of the graphic departments computers for the break and he said no =( so no taking a proc from work to tide me over.

whoops a good one
M$ makes alot of shiznit to mess with our time and money. I always depend on my trusty windows98 to solve most OS dilema. That one cd I think loves me sometimes. It's always there for me when all the other OS turn on me. Sure plop in win98 and it says would you like to replace your current OS ? The answer is, YES. It begins, without hesitation. You won't get that kind of customer support from M$ even, me thinks is why they got rid ofwin98. It was too good and removing tech support jobs. Then when win98 is installed, all the other M$ OS programs are more than happy to replace win98, it don't happen the other way, again I believe this is not by chance.

I too love my windows 98 cd. It brings me great joy when it will slap xp in the face and install right over it. Great joy.

Sheesh, I like XP 100x better than 98. Much more stable and far better driver support in my experience.

no you see I like XP. But the 98 cd will allow you to install over ANYTHING. So if you've got someone who has screwed their computer so very hard to the point that it's format and reinstall you can just install 98 over it and be able to back stuff up (after virus scanning it) most things that screw xp don't bother 98.
