View Full Version : Beginner raid targets

I'd like to start running some raid's with our guild, and am looking on suggestions as to targets that would be good to learn on.
We can generally field 1 solid group of 73-75th level toons, one more maybe 65+, and a third about 55+. (give or take depending on who's on).
I've thought about grummus, I think he'd be doable, we've been slowly getting everyone flagged for 7th hammer which should be another doable one I think. I've been along on raids through hedge and to terris thule, I think we could handle those although I'm not positive about terris with the adds.
Any other suggestions?
Honestly, this is a hard question.
I can tell you that I've sub-one-grouped Grummus for shits and giggles at L 70, but that doesn't mean much: I don't know how much of that was because we where L 70, and how much of that was because of the gear we where wearing.
...
For profitable and easy raids, I'd be tempted to go after targets that have clickies. Luclin was full of them.
Arch Lich, for example, drops a shield that has a mana regen clicky that is still useful to mages in todays game. (2 mana per tick).
The memory clicky item from the Ssra basement is still useful to todays enchanters.
BloodFrenzy from that same encounter does surprisingly well on the aggro charts (at least it did a few expansions ago) thanks to it's EB proc and high proc-mod. Check the aggro spreadsheet first. :)
PoP is a shorter on the neat class-crossing clickies, and the stats on drops pretty bad by today's standards.
On luclin-era targets, the only hard part will be the scripted events and special abilities of the creatures: the DPS of Luclin-era NPCs is ridiculously low. This gives you a chance to practice dealing with scripted events without worrying so much about dead tanks.

After the fableds are gone, raid Ssra. You get to play with clearing trash, rampage, AE's, perma-rooted mobs, deathtouch, etc., etc. The long respawn is a pain if anyone on your server is also raiding it.
Epic 1.5 fights - good mixture of stuff.
Have a scout through the mobs in RCoD, NC and WoS, those three zones have a good mix of targets of different strengths.

OK, I might get laughed off the boards for this but with 1/3rd at 55 you might have some fun still with the Manor event in Kael... Dunno maybe it's too gimp now but great place to learn and enforce the basics imo.

The lvl disparity makes raiding the same targets really hard imo, mainly due to the large prevalence of AE's in PoP + raiding. However, if you wish to proceed I would recommend researching the 24-man DoN raids. The trial of perserverence (sp) is an example of one that isn't too complicated. I think the main focus should be on getting the 55 + toons to 65 + at least, at which point they will survive PoP AE's, allowing them a richer raiding experience rather than just being cannon fodder.

Kinadam makes a good point--get them to 65 and raiding will be easier.

Thanks for the suggestions. Luclin is sounding like maybe what I was looking for, low dps raid mobs with scripts to learn with. Everyone loves clickies too.
We've done a few 1.5 fights, but I think they're a little on the rough side for us to be learning from, especially with the aoe's and our level disparity as Kinadan said.
Having everyone 65+ would help, but don't think it's realistic for us as a casual guild until people get there at their own rates.

I think you have a ready-made force for a number of epic 1.5 fights.
In fact, if you're still working out how to raid, you could do some 1.0 stuff on "light" nights for anyone in your guild who wants 1.0s. What made me think of this was that a few days ago I tanked CT with a group+, a mix of sub and post 70 folks. It was kind of a hoot.
Anyway, I'd pick early targets that you can thump if folks haven't raided a lot. Builds confidence, lets people learn in situations where their mistakes don't wipe the raid.

Luclin has a few targets your < 65s would like, such as Grieg, RC and Doomshade.
Most of the PoP scripts are bound to progression, so there aren't many gear farms there until the EPs. Unless you join an open raid crew or form an alliance, PoP progression isnt going to be a good path, since it's tuned for more numbers.
Get them BoT flagged and do some towers.
PoN has a 4 group (max) script.
The Qnimi dome fight is also 4 groups with good drops
Pox in Barindu should be doable.
Ferubi names would be even better if you could do them. Smith has a nice clicky.
If you can get your crew to 65, you get some more options, not just in locked zones, but also required gear levels. It gets really old really fast, but I'd push folks thru tipt. You get a bracer and an aug per trip. That opens up KT for your 65+ toons.
Temple of the Damned at KT zi has some good drops, especially for under 70s.
Ageless Relic Protector also in KT is a longer cycle and is harder but also good.
Primals in Yxtta are HUGE. All your tanks should have 30ac augs*
Ikkinz 1/2 may be hard to complete but worth trying, at least giving you 1 drop per run.
* make sure your knights know to put it in their shield
OoW has a number of raid targets that are manageable 2/3 group at 70-75:
NC - Menlo and the Murk named and a couple more I never tried
WoS - Velt (gflux is always fun) and maybe the Murk named
RCoD - Kyv archers and Bridgekeeper, eventually Tiorpat

There is that one DoDh mob in undershore thats a scripted fight, its a single gorup mission, but since in a open zone, everyone can help, i think its called seeker. On hard its got loot all those toons could use mstolikly.

Forgot about the seeker. You can chain spawn the bejesus out of it if you have a few people flagged for it or if you just care about the drops and not the quest (cursor) reward.

Yes, the seeker is a great farm target. A single ramp and 2 add spawns. Good training there.
I think Emoush would be a good raid for you to attempt as well. I think you can pull it off with the right strat. And the 250hp/mana + spell from completeing tier 2 would go a long way to improve your guild as a whole.

Nice list.
I'll have to start looking at some of those.
It's amazing how much content not only have I never seen, but didn't really know existed either.

This is our little raid forces first-kill timeline,

We started with fewer than you, no one over 70 and plenty under 60.

Epics, Epics, Epics.
Do the easier ones first.
I cant tell you how much of a force multiplier they are as you slowly take your core from bazaar weapons to epics.
The impact was rather awesome on my small family guild.

And right now you probably still have people that will use the chest rewards.

Varalla is dead on with the advice, then use Fenier's excellent checklist.

You should start with the autowin loots from DoDH because gear makes everything easier and you get massive number of loots from them, as long as you research ahead of time and figure out what missions you need.
If you're raiding for the sake of learning, PoP is still a good place to learn the basics, though the gear really isn't useful at this point. If you're raiding for the sake of gearing, you should probably start with Epic 1.5s which should not be too hard to do if you're equipped with ~200 HP items from DoDH missions. Stay away from GoD unless you're in the mood for a challenge.

If your too undergeared to group there i would imagine you could 2 or 3 group the static versions of ashengate and frostcrypt for the higher end 1 group stuff.

http://eqbeastiary.allakhazam.com/search.shtml?id=20047 for beginner raids with a large level disparity thats not a bad place to start loot is decent and can chain spawn it if people are willing to run around and do the leg work. Its not terribly difficult fight and everyone can participate

If they really want to do PoP I'd suggest getting the alternate access piece in WW for them. It pops every 2 hours, you can practice raiding in there and kill a few of the mini's. Jiva's the only one that might be hard since if you have very low dps his adds build up over time.

Don't you need everything previous to SolRo to be able to zone in via the backflag.

The only thing you need to zone into Tower of Solusek Ro is the effreeti heart if your just farming for xp and killing minor named and the mini's. If your doing it for progression and trying to kill Solusek Ro you do basically need all the pre-flags.
Overall the alternate access quests other than the Banished Effreeti don't seem to mix well with progression flags but that might be better now.

the alternate access quests are exactly that... alternate ACCESS, they arnt alternate PROGRESSSION tasks. They get you in the zone, but dont help with progression.

Epics!
Lirah and Tiorpat in rcod may take some work but are probably doable.

Bridge keeper would be pretty easy, jsut use a knight to ranged aggro, then ranged dps, he doesnt summon, and only the knight will get hit with the ae's

When you mentioned Grummus it reminded me of the time we helped
one of our beastlords get his 1.5 drop in the palace in plane of disease,
and we decided to "go for it" and see if we could kill grummus.
I was the only one who was raid geared but my guild does does
have some nice stuff from dodh missions, relic quests, etc.
We just had one group with 5 people in it and the fight took forever,
and we were very close to wiping but we squeaked it out and killed him.
A few never had gotten there flags so was nice to see them get a aa out of it
and I was very giddy knowing just 5 of my guild beat Grummus when it used
to take a full raid. This took place about 3 months ago.
